Overview

DR-RISE (Demand Response – Residential Innovation for a Sustainable Energy system) is a Horizon Europe project focused on transforming residential energy use through advanced demand response strategies.

The project develops a holistic residential demand response platform that integrates:

  • Real-time and predictive optimisation of household energy flows
  • Coordination between end-users, aggregators, and grid operators
  • User-centric design with co-creation methodologies
  • Privacy-preserving and secure data management

Its goal is to unlock the potential of residential flexibility to support a more efficient, resilient, and decarbonised European energy system.

Motivation

The European energy system is undergoing a rapid transformation driven by decarbonisation targets and increasing electrification of demand.

However, residential demand response remains underexploited due to several barriers:

  • Limited engagement and awareness of end-users
  • Fragmented integration of flexibility into energy markets
  • Lack of scalable residential optimisation tools
  • Regulatory and institutional constraints

DR-RISE addresses these challenges by placing citizens at the centre of the energy system and enabling active participation in demand-side flexibility markets.
